Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to encrypt files or block access to a computer system until a ransom is paid to the attackers. It is a form of cyber extortion that has become increasingly prevalent and damaging in recent years.

Here’s how ransomware typically works:

  1. Infection: Ransomware is usually spread through deceptive email attachments, malicious downloads, or by exploiting vulnerabilities in software or operating systems. Once a user’s system is infected, the ransomware begins encrypting files or locks the system.
  2. Encryption: The ransomware encrypts the victim’s files using a strong encryption algorithm, making them inaccessible without the decryption key, which is held by the attackers. This includes files on the infected computer as well as files on connected network drives or cloud storage.
  3. Ransom Note: After encrypting the files, the ransomware displays a message to the victim, typically in the form of a pop-up window or a text file. The note informs the victim that their files are encrypted and provides instructions on how to pay the ransom to obtain the decryption key.
  4. Ransom Payment: The attackers demand a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, to be paid within a specified timeframe. Payment is often required through anonymous channels to make it difficult to trace the attackers. The ransom amount can vary widely, ranging from a few hundred to thousands or even millions of dollars.
  5. Decryption: If the victim decides to pay the ransom, they receive instructions on how to send the payment, and in return, the attackers provide a decryption key or tool to unlock the encrypted files. However, there is no guarantee that paying the ransom will result in the successful recovery of files, as some attackers may not fulfil their promise or may demand further payments.

It is crucial to note that paying the ransom does not guarantee the recovery of files and can further incentivise attackers. Organisations should carefully evaluate the potential risks, consult with ARAANKISH, and consider other options before deciding to pay the ransom.

Prevention, preparation, and a robust incident response plan are key to effectively mitigating the risks associated with ransomware attacks. Organisations should prioritise cybersecurity measures and regularly review and update their defences to stay ahead of evolving ransomware threats.
